I’d disagree. Hibernating allows you to begin working exactly where you left off, whereas a quick boot, although nice, still leaves you with having to open applications, load necessary files and browse to websites all over again.
I’m still waiting for fast, reliable and many-times reusable solid-state RAM so that the only thing you ever do is hibernate your system.
Okay, I’ll accept that. But a ten-second boot cycle would still be a very good thing.
There are several promising technologies (some of which I’ve talked about here) that could do that sort of thing. And there’s commercial need for it, so no doubt it will happen sooner or later.
I’m waiting for the insides of computers to get warmer and dryer so they won’t need to have boots at all.
